The best way to run the Chesapeake Subnet Calculator is from within a Java capable browser. We've worked with Netscape 3.0 and Internet Explorer 3.0. An alternative approach is to use the appletviewer contained in the Java Developer's Kit (JDK). We recommend the browser approach unless you already have the JDK installed.
If you have a Java capable browser installed, you can download the appropriate format file to install on your machine. First, create a directory where you want the files installed such as C:\java\applets\subcalc on a PC, or /usr/local/lib/java/applets/subcalc on a Unix workstation.
You will need to Download one of the distribution files. For PCs, either the zip file is most appropriate. For Unix workstations, the tar file will generally be more appropriate. It is best to save the file in the directory you created above.
On your local machine, you'll have to extract the distribution. How you do this depends on the file format you downloaded.
The easiest way for PCs is to download the zip file (subcalc.zip) and extract into the directory you selected above. On a PC, start Windows Explorer, find the downloaded file, and click on it. Windows will run winzip on the resulting zip file to extract it.
On Unix workstations, grab the tar file, then run the following
command:
tar xvf subcalc.tar.
To run the Chesapeake Subnet Calculator, simply point your Java capable browser at the subcalc.html file, and a local version of the calculator should come right up. To access the web page documentation, point your browser at index.html.
