What do I need to run the Chesapeake Subnet Calculator?

You will need to have a web browser capable of executing Java applets. Both Netscape Navigator 3.0 and Internet Explorer 3.0 have been tested.

What operating systems are supported?

Windows 95, Windows NT, and Unix. We've not been able to test on a Macintosh, but theoretically, it is also supported as long as the browser used supports Java applets. Note that Windows 3.1 is not supported.

Why is Windows 3.1 not supported?

Java is not currently supported on Windows 3.1. One reason is that long filenames are required and they are not available on Windows 3.1 (including Windows 3.11 and Windows for Workgroups.) There are rumors in the trade rags that when (if) that becomes available, then we will be able to run on that platform too.

Why Java?

Java is the new programming language of the Internet. It runs on a variety of systems without requiring a different version for each different operating system. Internet browsers such as Netscape and Internet Explorer now support Java applets (an applet is a tiny application that performs a small task within the browser.)

What do I do if it doesn't run?

Check that your browser has Java enabled (this is not the same thing as having Javascript enabled). In Netscape, go to the menu Edit->Preferences. When the dialog box appears, click on the word 'Advanced' in the left column. Make sure the box is checked for 'Java'.
